Gyroscopic stability formula
WebarXiv.org e-Print archive WebFeb 1, 2024 · Gyroscopic stability is the resistance of a rotating body to changing its axis of rotation. Stability factors are advantageous for projectile designers, as they allow a good estimate of ballistic stability without having to analyse a large flight envelope with numerical analysis, which can be time consuming and resource intensive.

WebOct 20, 2014 · Here, a new amended formula is developed for the gyroscopic stability of plastic-tipped bullets by substituting the length of just the metal portion for the total length in the $(1 + L^2)$ term of the original Miller twist rule. Part 2 describes experimental testing of this new formula on three plastic-tipped bullets. WebJul 4, 2010 · Angular momentum and gyroscopic effects play an important role in stability and control theory and, thus, must be considered in the design process. Consider the propeller to the left in Figure 15-14, which rotates at a constant angular rate Ω x (computed per Equation (15-7)).As it rotates about the x-axis (the axis of rotation), it generates an …
WebAug 15, 2024 · s = gyroscopic stability factor (dimensionless) d = bullet diameter in inches l and L= bullet length in calibers If you’re scratching your head about that “length in calibers,” that’s ok. Take the length of the bullet and divide it by its width. For example, a 175 grain SMK .308 bullet is 1.24″ long.
